Overview

The Unitree R1 is an affordable, ultra‑lightweight humanoid robot designed for developers, researchers, and educators. It features agile mobility, customizable hardware finishes, open control interfaces, and integration with large multimodal models for voice and image interaction. It prioritizes movement capabilities as a foundation for completing tasks while maintaining ease of maintenance and broad ecosystem compatibility. The R1 is offered in multiple variants including R1 AIR, standard R1, and R1 EDU.

The R1 comes in three configurations per Unitree's official spec sheet. The R1 Air weighs approximately 27 kg with battery and has 20 degrees of freedom: 6 per leg, 4 per arm, no waist or head joints, no hands, and a monocular camera. The R1 weighs approximately 29 kg and has 26 degrees of freedom: 6 per leg, 5 per arm, 2 waist, 2 head, and a binocular camera. The R1 EDU matches the R1 physically but expands to 26–40 degrees of freedom with an optional dexterous hand and support for secondary development. All three variants stand 123 cm tall (1230 x 357 x 190 mm).

All R1 variants use low-inertia high-speed internal rotor permanent magnet synchronous motors with dual plus single encoders per joint, crossed roller and double hook ball bearings, and local air cooling. Base compute is an 8-core processor on all variants; the EDU adds support for optional high-power compute modules including NVIDIA Orin (40–100 TOPS). Sensors include a 4-microphone array and speaker on all variants. Connectivity is WiFi 6 and Bluetooth 5.2. Battery runtime is approximately 1 hour on all variants. OTA updates are supported.

Pricing per Unitree's official shop: R1 Air from $4,900, R1 from $5,900, R1 EDU on request. Shipping costs between $300 and $1,200 are additional; customs duties are the buyer's responsibility. The standard R1 carries an 8-month warranty and does not include secondary development access. The R1 EDU includes secondary development access and a 12-month warranty.
