Overview
Optimus Gen 2 is Tesla’s latest humanoid robot prototype, featuring improved hands, faster walking speed, and lighter weight compared to the first generation. Demonstrations show autonomous walking, object manipulation, and fine motor control. The robot remains under active development with no commercial deployment announced.
Optimus Gen 2 was unveiled in December 2023. It stands 173 cm tall and weighs 57 kg — approximately 16 kg lighter than Gen 1. Walking speed increased 30% over the prior generation. The hands shipped with 11 degrees of freedom and tactile sensors on all five fingertips, demonstrated picking up a raw egg without cracking it. The body has 28 degrees of freedom total, powered entirely by Tesla-designed actuators using three types of rotary and three types of linear actuators with planetary roller screw technology. Battery capacity is 2.3 kWh at 52 volts, rated for approximately 8 hours of operation. Payload is 20 kg carried while walking.
Optimus runs perception and control systems derived from Tesla’s Full Self-Driving stack, using vision cameras without LiDAR. AI training uses data from Tesla’s vehicle fleet alongside factory-collected robot data. Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings update described a Gen 3 hand upgrade — 22 degrees of freedom with 50 actuators total (25 per forearm and hand unit) — entering deployment at the Fremont factory. Tesla describes the Gen 3 hand as a component upgrade to the Gen 2 body, not a full new robot generation.
As of Tesla’s Q4 2025 earnings update, Optimus units are deployed exclusively inside Tesla’s own factories, primarily for battery cell handling and parts sorting at Fremont and Austin. Tesla stated in its Q4 2025 deck that Gen 3 — described as its first design intended for mass production — has start of production planned before end of 2026, with an eventual target capacity of 1 million robots per year. Optimus is not available for external purchase as of mid-2026. No public pricing has been confirmed by Tesla.
