Overview

NEO is a general-purpose humanoid robot developed by 1X Technologies for operation in human-centric environments. The platform emphasizes safe interaction, teleoperation-first control, and gradual autonomy. Public performance data remains limited.

NEO stands approximately 167 cm tall and weighs 30 kg, according to 1X Technologies. The actuation system uses 1X's patented Tendon Drive — flexible polymer tendons driven by what the company describes as the highest-torque-density motors it has produced. Total body degrees of freedom is 75, with 22 DoF per hand. The body is wrapped in a custom 3D-lattice polymer structure that makes all external surfaces pinch-proof. The soft outer suit is machine-washable nylon. Acoustic output is rated at 22 dB during operation. Battery capacity is 842 Wh with approximately four hours of runtime and fast-charge capability.

NEO runs Redwood AI, 1X's generalist AI model, for autonomous task execution. A built-in large language model handles voice interaction, with Audio Intelligence for speaker detection and Visual Intelligence for contextual awareness. For tasks the robot cannot yet complete autonomously, 1X offers Expert Mode — scheduled remote sessions where a 1X operator controls the robot via VR while NEO's AI observes and learns. NEO manages its own charging autonomously, returning to a wall-mounted dock when battery is low.

1X launched NEO for pre-order on October 28, 2025, priced at $20,000 outright or $499 per month on subscription. A $200 refundable deposit secures a place in the queue. Initial shipments are targeted for 2026 in the United States. 1X Technologies is headquartered in Palo Alto, California and was founded by Norwegian roboticist Bernt Børnich. The company has raised $100 million in a 2024 Series B and counts OpenAI's Startup Fund among its investors.
